This leaflet tells you about the one way system being introduced for the Windus Streets for People Scheme. It tells you:
1. About the opening of the one way.
2. The streets affected, including a map.
3. The traffic signs you will see and what they mean, also on the map.
4. Why the one way system is being introduced.
1. Opening date
It is planned to make the one way system operational on 13th of February 2006. This is dependent on the completion of construction of key junction tables and roadworks. You will be able to tell when the one way is operational as the traffic signs currently covered will be revealed. The police have been fully informed of the scheme, and once in operation, it will be subject to legal enforcement. Traffic Marshalls will also be present on the first [day?] to help co-ordinate the smooth introduction of the system.
2. Streets affected
The following roads north of Cazenove Road will be affected:
· Alkham Road – one way from Lampard Grove south to Windus Road
· Kyverdale Road – one way from Cazenove Road north to Lynmouth Road & one way from Firsby Road south to Lynmouth Road
· Filey Avenue – one way from Kyverdale Road west to Osbaldeston Road
· Lampard Grove – one way from Oldhill Street east to Kyverdale Road
· Lynmouth Road – one way from Kyverdale Road west to Oldhill Street
· Oldhill Street – one way from Lynmouth Road south to Filey Avenue
· Osbaldeston Road – one way from Oldhill Street south to Cazenove Road & one way from Oldhill Street north to Lynmouth Road
· Forburg Road – one way south from Clapton Common
· Chardmore Road – one way from Filey Avenue north to Clapton Common
The map with this leaflet also gives you an overview and will help you plan your journeys through the area. Motor vehicles (i.e. cars, motorbikes, vans, lorries, etc) will only be able to travel in the one direction but bicycles will be able to travel in both directions. There will be traffic signs [and road markings – depends on timing] to indicate this throughout the scheme.
3. Traffic signs
There will be traffic signs at junctions and key points, and each of those you will see and their meaning is explained. Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with them on the supplied drawing, and ensure you know what they mean.
4. Why the one way system is being introduced
The one way system being introduced was consulted on in December 2003. The aim is to make the area safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and reduce congestion, whilst causing the least amount of disruption to residents and other people who use the area. The one way system will allow residents and visitors to the area to travel more easily through it by:
· Removing much of the need for vehicles to pass each other in narrow streets, (the cause of a lot of arguments), motorists speeding through roads to avoid meeting oncoming traffic, and on occasion vehicles mounting pavements
· The introduction of raised junction and inroad speed tables to counteract increased speeds created by the streets becoming one way, should make it safer for pedestrians. The extended pavements on tables also provide safer vantage points.
· Retaining accessibility for cyclists with two way cycling throughout
